SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 60
Commending John I. Burton High School.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, January 15, 2015
 

WHEREAS, John I. Burton High School in Norton was named a $25,000 winner in the 2014 Celebrate My Drive contest; and

WHEREAS, the Celebrate My Drive contest, which is sponsored by State Farm, uses positive and upbeat messages in its nationwide contest to stress the importance of awareness and safe driving habits for new drivers; and

WHEREAS, J. I. Burton High School students enthusiastically took part in the contest; they were tasked with obtaining safe driving commitments from as many young people as possible, ages 14 and older; and

WHEREAS, the safe driving commitment is an effort by State Farm to promote wise decision-making by new drivers, and the J. I. Burton High School students were strong proponents of spreading Celebrate My Drive’s safety slogan: 2N2, keep two eyes on the road and two hands on the wheel; and

WHEREAS, J. I. Burton High School was one of more than 3,000 schools to participate in the 2014 Celebrate My Drive competition, and it was one of only 90 schools to win a $25,000 grant for its success in motivating students to embrace safe driving habits; and

WHEREAS, the students of J. I. Burton High School plan to use the money to support academic programs, extracurricular clubs, and athletic programs; additionally, all winning schools are required to devote 10 percent of the cash award to programs that promote good driving habits; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That John I. Burton High School hereby be commended for winning $25,000 in the 2014 Celebrate My Drive safe driving contest; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Aaron Williams, principal of John I. Burton High School, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s congratulations and admiration for promoting the importance of safe driving to the Commonwealth’s newest drivers.
