WHEREAS, the Honorable Dudley J. Emick, Jr., of Daleville, who represented the residents of the Roanoke region in the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia and served as a judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of the 25th Judicial District of Virginia, died on October 25, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Bartley, West Virginia, Dudley Emick was known to family and friends as “Buzz”; he graduated from Jefferson Senior High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from what is now Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps; and

WHEREAS, Dudley Emick served his country in the United States Army as a second lieutenant with the 69th Signal Battalion; after completing his military service, he earned a law degree from the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Dudley Emick practiced law with a firm in Fincastle for many years; desirous to be of further service to the community and the Commonwealth, he ran for and was elected to the House of Delegates in 1971; and

WHEREAS, Dudley Emick was elected to the Senate of Virginia in 1975, and he ably represented the residents of the 22nd District for 16 years; he supported and sponsored many important pieces of legislation and offered his leadership and expertise to several committees; and

WHEREAS, in 1992, Dudley Emick was appointed as a judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of the 25th Judicial District of Virginia, where he presided with great fairness and wisdom until his retirement in 2005; and

WHEREAS, Dudley Emick worked to enhance and strengthen the Botetourt County community; he was a member of the local Lions Club and Jaycees and was active with the Lord Botetourt High School football program; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Dudley Emick served the Roanoke Valley and the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and distinction; and

WHEREAS, Dudley Emick will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Martha; children, Mary, Dudley III, Margaret, and Laura, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues on both sides of the aisle; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable Dudley J. Emick, Jr., a dedicated public servant and community leader; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Dudley J. Emick, Jr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
