2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Honorable Joseph Benedict Benedetti, a dedicated public servant who represented the residents of Richmond in the Virginia General Assembly for more than a decade, died on November 19, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Benedetti joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to his country, deploying to Japan with occupation forces following World War II; he then earned a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary, where he was a member of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps; and
WHEREAS, commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army in 1951, Joseph Benedetti served during the Korean War and earned a Bronze Star Medal for Valor; after the war, he returned to the Commonwealth and earned a law degree from the University of Richmond; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Benedetti served members of the community as an attorney before winning election to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1982; representing the 68th District, he was named Outstanding Freshman Legislator in 1983 and was reelected in 1984; and
WHEREAS, in 1986, Joseph Benedetti was elected to the Senate of Virginia, representing the 10th District; he served three terms until his well-earned retirement in 1998; and
WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career in public service, Joseph Benedetti sponsored and supported many important pieces of legislation to benefit all Virginians and offered his leadership and wisdom to numerous committees; he was named Senate Republican Floor Leader in 1996; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Benedetti generously supported the Richmond community through several charitable organizations, the Boy Scouts of America, the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club, and the American Legion; he sat on the board of visitors of Saint Gertrude High School and Benedictine College Preparatory and enjoyed fellowship and worship as an active member of Saint Benedict Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, respected for his collegial nature and firm commitment to bettering the lives of all Virginians, Joseph Benedetti was a man of integrity who served the Commonwealth with distinction; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Benedetti will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members, friends, and colleagues on both sides of the aisle; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable Joseph Benedict Benedetti, a dedicated public servant who represented the residents of Richmond in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Joseph Benedict Benedetti as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
