Celebrating the life of Willie Fobbs, Sr.

WHEREAS, Willie Fobbs, Sr., of Petersburg, a proud veteran of the United States military, a talented athlete who was a member of a Negro League baseball team, a man of faith, and a devoted husband and father, died on June 6, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Willie Fobbs was educated in the Petersburg City Public Schools system and later joined the United States Army; he proudly defended his country during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart during his military service; and

WHEREAS, Willie Fobbs was a faithful employee of the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, retiring from the iconic Petersburg business after many years of service; he was one of the original members of Club 17, Inc., which was founded in 1950; and

WHEREAS, a talented baseball player and an enthusiastic fan of many local sports, Willie Fobbs played for a Negro League baseball team as a young man and later was a member of many local softball teams; he also was a devoted Washington Redskins fan; and

WHEREAS, a man of faith, Willie Fobbs enjoyed fellowship and worship at Zion Baptist Church in Petersburg, where he was a member for 69 years; he served on the church’s Usher Board; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by Lucille, his wife of 63 years, and by three sons, Willie, Jr., David, and an unnamed infant, Willie Fobbs will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his sons, Troy and Johnny, and their families; and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Willie Fobbs, Sr., of Petersburg, a proud veteran of the United States military, a talented athlete who was a member of a Negro League baseball team, a man of faith, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Willie Fobbs, Sr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
