SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 108
Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the creation of the Court of Scott County.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, February 25, 2015
 

WHEREAS, Scott County was established in November 1814, and the first official act of the County was to convene a court in February 1815; and

WHEREAS, commissioned by the Governor to serve as sheriff of Scott County, John Anderson opened the Court of Scott County on February 14, 1815; and

WHEREAS, the Court of Scott County was held at the home of Benjamin Hollins in Moccasin Gap and convened over a three-day period to conduct the business of the County; and

WHEREAS, William H. Carter was elected to serve as the first clerk of the Court of Scott County, and numerous other citizens were appointed to County leadership positions; the court also arranged for the first County election; and

WHEREAS, in 1915, with the help of Dr. John P. McConnell—then president of Radford University—Scott County erected a granite historical marker on the site of the first court; and

WHEREAS, the residents of Scott County will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the creation of the Court of Scott County with a ceremony in the courtroom of the Scott County Circuit Court on February 15, 2015, sponsored by the Overmountain Men Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, Carter’s Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Virginia Frontier Society Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the 200th anniversary of the creation of the Court of Scott County hereby be commemorated; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution for presentation to Scott County requesting that the County further disseminate copies of this resolution to its respective constituents so that they may be apprised of the sense of the Senate of Virginia in this matter.
