Celebrating the life of Ellett Richard McGeorge, Jr.

WHEREAS, Ellett Richard McGeorge, Jr., of Varina, the founding director of the Henrico County Recreation and Parks Department, a former head football and baseball coach at Varina High School, a veteran of World War II, a friend and mentor to many people, and a devoted husband and father, died on January 1, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Ellett McGeorge, who was known as Mac, was born in King William County and attended the University of Richmond for two years, where he played football and basketball; he then joined the United States military, serving as a naval hospital corpsman during World War II; and

WHEREAS, after the war ended, Mac McGeorge returned to college and changed his major from pre-med to physical education, having decided that he wanted to work with people and be a coach; he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond in 1949; and

WHEREAS, later that year, Mac McGeorge became a health and physical education teacher and coached baseball and football at Varina High School; within a few years, he was head coach of both sports, and was a mentor to many student athletes; and

WHEREAS, in 1956, Mac McGeorge was hired to be the part-time director of the summer recreation program for Henrico County; it was a small endeavor then, but in 1969, the county government created a recreation department and hired Mac McGeorge as its full-time director; and

WHEREAS, by the time Mac McGeorge retired in 1988, the department was responsible for 32 properties in the Henrico County parks system that covered more than 2,000 acres, and he supervised a staff of more than 300 full-time and part-time employees; and

WHEREAS, former students and employees remember Mac McGeorge’s ability to encourage and motivate them; he wanted people to do their best, and he worked to shape leaders, instill confidence, and foster accountability; and

WHEREAS, Mac McGeorge, who was predeceased by Rose Lee, his wife of 62 years, will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children, Patricia, Pamela, Rick, and Bruce, and their families; and by many other family members, friends, and former students and coworkers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ellett Richard McGeorge, Jr., of Varina, the first director of the Henrico County Recreation and Parks Department who was the former head football and baseball coach at Varina High School, a veteran of World War II, a friend and mentor to many people, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ellett Richard McGeorge, Jr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
