WHEREAS, G. E. Via III, who has represented the citizens of Ashland for 28 years as an appointed and elected official and currently serves on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, will retire from public service at the end of 2015; and

WHEREAS, G. E. “Ed” Via’s experience in local government is extensive; he served on the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for 16 years and then was a member of the Hanover County Planning Commission for four years, representing the Ashland District; and

WHEREAS, desiring to be of further service to the people of Ashland, in 2007 Ed Via was elected to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, and currently is in his second term; he was vice chair of the board in 2009, and served as board chair in 2010 and 2012; and

WHEREAS, Ed Via has been a member of several committees of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, including the Legislative Committee and the Rules Committee, and is an alternate member of the Joint Education Committee; and

WHEREAS, Ed Via worked for the betterment of the area as Hanover County’s representative to the Hanover and Ashland Liaison Committee and as a board member of the Capital Region Airport Commission and Richmond Region Tourism; he serves as an alternate member of the Capital Region Taxicab Advisory Board; and

WHEREAS, Ed Via has provided guidance as a member of the Hanover County Social Services Advisory Board and of the board of directors of Sports Backers; he has endeavored to fulfill the county’s vision to be a premier community, where people and businesses can achieve their full potential; and

WHEREAS, Ed Via is a graduate of John Marshall High School and North Carolina Wesleyan College; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and loyal public official, Ed Via has considered it an honor and privilege to serve the people of Hanover County to the best of his ability during a period of change and growth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That G. E. Via III hereby be commended for his many years of service to the people of Ashland and Hanover County as a member of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, the Hanover County Planning Commission, and the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to G. E. Via III as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect and admiration for his many years of public service to the people of Ashland and Hanover County and the Commonwealth.
