Celebrating the life of Henry D. Parker, Jr.

WHEREAS, Henry D. Parker, Jr., a respected businessman and dedicated public servant who worked to strengthen and enhance the Prince George County community, died on February 16, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Prince George County, Henry Parker served his country as a member of the United States Army and was on active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable discharge, Henry Parker returned to his beloved home of Prince George County and began to build a legacy of service to the community; possessed of an entrepreneurial spirit, he owned and operated Parker’s Grocery on James River Drive for more than 50 years; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to his fellow residents, Henry Parker ran for and was elected to the Prince George County Board of Supervisors, where he served for eight terms; and

WHEREAS, Henry Parker helped guide Prince George County through periods of growth and transition, including the expansion of Fort Lee, the establishment of the Rolls-Royce Crosspointe Campus, and the opening of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing; and

WHEREAS, a humble and generous man, Henry Parker made many anonymous donations to charitable groups and supported others with his time and leadership; he was an honorary member of the Burrowsville Ruritan Club and Burrowsville Volunteer Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, Henry Parker cultivated a love of baseball from a young age and shared his passion with others as a board member of the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum in Baltimore, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Henry Parker will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members, friends, employees, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Henry D. Parker, Jr., a successful entrepreneur and diligent public servant; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry D. Parker, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
