2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Swanson Middle School, an outstanding public school in Arlington, has helped students cultivate a passion for lifelong learning for 75 years; and
WHEREAS, originally known as Swanson Junior High School, Swanson Middle School was built in 1939 on land purchased from the Torreyson family using Public Works Administration funds; and
WHEREAS, Swanson Middle School opened in 1940 with Lena Wolfe as its first principal and served students in grades seven, eight, and nine; the school was named for Claude Swanson, a former member of the United States House of Representatives, United States Senator, Governor of Virginia, and Secretary of the Navy; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, Swanson Middle School became an intermediate school, serving students in grades seven and eight; it became a middle school, serving students in grades six, seven, and eight, in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Swanson Middle School offers a comprehensive curriculum and numerous student activities, organizations, and athletics programs to ensure that students receive a well-rounded education; and
WHEREAS, Swanson Middle School has succeeded in its mission thanks to the dedication of its faculty and staff, the hard work of its student body, and the support of parents and the community; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, Swanson Middle School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest surviving middle school in Arlington County; and
WHEREAS, Swanson Middle School has earned numerous awards and accolades for its commitment to academic excellence and student achievement; in 2015, it was ranked by Niche as the top middle school in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Swanson Middle School on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Swanson Middle School as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s many contributions to the youth of the Arlington community.
