15104984DWHEREAS, William Mackensen Dressler, Sr., of Covington, an automobile dealer, proud veteran of World War II, strong supporter of businesses and civic organizations in Alleghany County, and a devoted husband and father, died on February 4, 2015; and
WHEREAS, William “Bill” Dressler was a native of Alleghany County and served in the United States Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II as part of the 1st Armored Division; in 1944, he was severely wounded during the amphibious invasion of Anzio and received the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, after the war, Bill Dressler owned Dressler Motors, Inc., in Covington; he was an automobile dealer for more than 50 years and was a member of the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association; and
WHEREAS, Bill Dressler belonged to the National Automobile Dealers Association and was a founding director and longtime treasurer of the South Atlantic Dodge Dealers Advertising Association; and
WHEREAS, working to promote economic development in Alleghany County and support civic endeavors, Bill Dressler was active in the Covington and Clifton Forge Industrial Development Association, the Covington Retail Merchants Association, and the Salvation Army Advisory Board; and
WHEREAS, Bill Dressler also belonged to many other organizations, including the Covington Lodge No. 610 of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Covington Lions Club, where he was president and delegate to the 1960 international convention in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, always proud of his military service to his country, Bill Dressler was a life member and former commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033, Curtis A. Smith 116th Infantry Post; the 1st Armored Division Association; the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of World War II; and other veterans groups; and
WHEREAS, Bill Dressler was a man of faith who enjoyed fellowship and worship at Trinity Baptist Church and at Edgemont A. R. Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Sallie, Bill Dressler will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children, Linda, Sandra, and Bill, Jr., and their families; and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of William Mackensen Dressler, Sr., of Covington, an automobile dealer, proud veteran of World War II, strong supporter of businesses and civic organizations in Alleghany County, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Mackensen Dressler, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
