SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 346 Designating May 10 through May 16, in 2015, and the second week of May, in each succeeding year, as Virginia Hospital Week in Virginia.   Agreed to by the Senate, February 25, 2015 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 27, 2015  

WHEREAS, hospitals and health systems in the Commonwealth play an integral role in providing vital health care services to all Virginians, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, through acute care and specialty hospital services; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s hospitals and health systems provide almost $3 billion in community support, handle over 3.6 million emergency department visits, 781,000 inpatient admissions, 1.9 million outpatients, and deliver over 100,000 babies annually; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s hospitals and health systems are economic drivers in the Commonwealth, contributing $34.8 billion to the state economy in 2012 alone and directly and indirectly supporting 913,636 jobs, enough to rank among the top three employers in 45 percent of Virginia’s counties and cities; and

WHEREAS, hospitals and health systems in the Commonwealth continue to provide the health care Virginians need and support local economies and communities; and

WHEREAS, Virginia hospitals and health systems proactively work to improve the health status, quality of care, safety, and satisfaction of their patients and communities; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s hospitals and health systems provide care to those who need it regardless of their ability to pay; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth’s hospitals and health systems partner and collaborate with other organizations interested in making Virginia the healthiest state in the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate May 10 through May 16, in 2015, and the second week of May, in each succeeding year, as Virginia Hospital Week in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Virginia Department of Health so that members of the agency may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this week on the General Assembly’s website.
