SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 342
Commending Leidos.

WHEREAS, Leidos was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Cornerstones, Inc., with a prestigious 2015 Best of Reston Award in the Corporate Business Leader category; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards honor individuals, organizations, and companies that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping others and improving the lives of people throughout the greater Reston area; and

WHEREAS, Leidos, which relocated to Reston in 2013, is a worldwide leader in science and technology, developing innovative solutions to challenges in national security, health, and engineering; it is committed to responsible stewardship of the environment and actively supports employees as they work to enrich their communities; and

WHEREAS, Leidos works to provide for the basic needs and wellness of its neighbors by building strong relationships with nonprofit organizations and service groups; supporting, sponsoring, and celebrating employee volunteer opportunities; making charitable donations; and collaborating with local government agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen the region; and

WHEREAS, diligently supporting veterans, active-duty service members, and their families, Leidos employs nearly 4,000 veterans and contributes to charitable organizations and events with a similar mission; Leidos served as the first sponsor of the USO-Metro Firecracker 5K for the Troops in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Leidos is a champion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education in local schools from kindergarten through college; employees regularly volunteer their time and talents to mentor and motivate students, and the organization sponsored 12 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology robotics teams in the Reston area in 2014; and

WHEREAS, presenting a positive example of good leadership and ethical practices in the region, Leidos partnered with the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce to support Ethics Day at South Lakes High School, a program that gives students the opportunity to learn how to respond to real ethical dilemmas; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Leidos for its efforts to strengthen the community and on its well-deserved honor as a 2015 Best of Reston Award recipient in the Corporate Business Leader category; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mike Coogan, director of corporate responsibility and communications for Leidos, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s contributions to science and technology in the Commonwealth and support for the Reston community.
