Commending the Herndon Woman's Club.

WHEREAS, the Herndon Woman’s Club celebrated 75 years of service in 2014; the organization raises funds and provides volunteers for local, state, national, and international causes, focusing on education, public welfare, philanthropy, moral values, and civic and fine arts; and

WHEREAS, when it started in 1939 as the Junior Woman’s Club of Herndon, members were single women 25 and younger; in its early days, the club helped staff the local library, rolled bandages as part of the war effort during World War II, and sent wedding gowns to war brides in England; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Woman’s Club helps to improve the community; in its early years, the group performed vision screenings at local schools; the Fairfax County club has awarded college scholarships for more than 50 years and sponsors a child to attend Camp Easter Seals UCP; and

WHEREAS, one longtime member of the Herndon Woman’s Club is Elma Mankin, who has spent many hours on behalf of volunteer organizations working for the betterment of the town; on her 90th birthday in 2014, the woman’s club gave her a surprise party; and

WHEREAS, soon after its founding, the Herndon Woman’s Club became a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, whose signature effort is to prevent domestic violence; the Herndon club helps support a local shelter for victims of domestic abuse; and

WHEREAS, the Herndon Woman’s Club is organized into six departments to most effectively meet its community service goals: the Arts, Conservation, Education, Home Life, International Outreach, and Public Issues; and

WHEREAS, members of the Herndon Woman’s Club are actively involved with Herndon’s annual Labor Day Festival; the group sponsors a charity fundraiser, the Fall Fashion Show, and supports veterans by participating in Wreaths Across America and helping the Honor Flight Network; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Herndon Woman’s Club on its 75th anniversary and for its many decades of service during which members have raised funds for charity and volunteered for many varied and worthy causes; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pat Stark, president of the Herndon Woman’s Club, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for its generosity and worthwhile efforts and best wishes for the future.
