2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2015, the residents of Mecklenburg County in Southside Virginia mark the county’s 250th anniversary by celebrating the area’s rich history and proud traditions; and
WHEREAS, established from Lunenburg County in 1764, Mecklenburg County was named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of England, and held its first session of official business on March 1, 1765; and
WHEREAS, in its early days, Mecklenburg County’s many plantations were primarily devoted to the cultivation of tobacco, and farming has remained an important aspect of county life throughout its history; and
WHEREAS, Mecklenburg County is defined by its rivers and lakes; the Roanoke River has brought extensive trade to the region and the Meherrin River, now a Virginia Scenic River that attracts canoeists and kayakers, once powered the county’s grain mill industry; and
WHEREAS, Mecklenburg County’s three major lakes offer more than 1,200 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, and other outdoor activities, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the Commonwealth and the United States annually; and
WHEREAS, Mecklenburg County is a destination for historians, with the Prestwould plantation home in Clarksville, the Boyd Tavern in Boydton, MacCallum More Museum and Gardens in Chase City, and the Tobacco Farm Life Museum of Virginia in South Hill; and
WHEREAS, in recent years, Mecklenburg County has invested in infrastructure to serve better the business community and founded training institutions in the fields of manufacturing, technology, health care, and computer science to create new opportunities for local residents; and
WHEREAS, Mecklenburg County, sitting between Richmond and Raleigh, North Carolina, offers a quaint, comfortable rural lifestyle with easy access to thriving metropolitan areas; and
WHEREAS, Mecklenburg County will hold four anniversary celebrations throughout 2015, each highlighting different aspects of the county’s past, present, and future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Mecklenburg County on the occasion of its 250th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mecklenburg County as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the county’s storied history and many contributions to the Commonwealth.
