SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 265
Commending Ashland D. Fortune.

WHEREAS, Ashland D. Fortune, the longtime sheriff of Louisa County, has ably served and safeguarded members of the community for more than five decades; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Louisa County, Ashland Fortune graduated from Louisa County Public Schools and attended Virginia State University; and

WHEREAS, Ashland Fortune began his law-enforcement career as a member of the Town of Louisa Police Department in 1964; he rose through the ranks to become chief and ably led the department for 30 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, Ashland Fortune was elected sheriff, becoming the first African American sheriff in the history of Louisa County; deeply respected for his many contributions to the community, he was reelected in 2004, 2008, and 2012; and

WHEREAS, Ashland Fortune has implemented effective programs to better serve and protect Louisa County residents; he formed the first auxiliary police force and established a drug awareness program in local public schools; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader in the law-enforcement community, Ashland Fortune is a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association, the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police; and

WHEREAS, Ashland Fortune volunteered his time and wise leadership as a member of Crime Clinic and the local Transportation Safety Committee and as a board member of the Central Virginia Regional Jail, the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy, and Crime Solvers; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Ashland Fortune enjoys fellowship and worship with the community at Galilee Baptist Church, where he serves as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Ashland D. Fortune for his exceptional service to the people of Louisa County and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ashland D. Fortune as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his professionalism, leadership, and devotion to serving others.
