2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Willie and Sue Simpson of Rice in Prince Edward County helped preserve the history and heritage of the Commonwealth by transferring 130 acres of land to Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park in 2014; and
WHEREAS, working with the Civil War Trust, the largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization in the United States, Willie and Sue Simpson transferred 12 acres fee simple and 118 acres conservation easement at Marshall’s Crossroads to the care of Virginia State Parks; and
WHEREAS, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield was the site of one of the last battles of the war, and the Confederate defeat there factored heavily into General Robert E. Lee’s decision to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865; and
WHEREAS, the land provided by Willie and Sue Simpson will allow for interpretation of the Marshall’s Crossroads area, a critical strategic goal of both Union and Confederate forces during the battle; and
WHEREAS, Willie and Sue Simpson’s efforts to preserve the Commonwealth’s historic battlefields secure a lasting legacy for all Virginians; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Willie and Sue Simpson for transferring 130 acres of historically significant land to Virginia State Parks; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Willie and Sue Simpson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for their generous contributions to preserving and protecting the history of the Commonwealth.
