15105449DWHEREAS, David G. Helmer, a former executive with Norfolk Southern Corporation and generous community leader in Roanoke, died on February 21, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a native of Oklahoma, David Helmer graduated from Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps; he remained a loyal alumnus of the university throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, David Helmer served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army and retired from the military as a major; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong rail enthusiast, David Helmer applied for a job at Norfolk and Western Railway; he worked his way up to become director of the costs section at Norfolk Southern in Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, David Helmer worked to protect and preserve the history and heritage of the region as former president and director of the board of the Historical Society of Western Virginia; he also helped establish the O. Winston Link Museum and served on the advisory committee; and
WHEREAS, a humble man who worked tirelessly to strengthen and enhance the community, David Helmer was active with the Roanoke Kiwanis Club, North Cross School, and many other civic and service organizations; and
WHEREAS, David Helmer will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of David G. Helmer, a respected businessman and community leader in Roanoke; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David G. Helmer as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
