2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Marie Boyd, a generous community leader and tireless volunteer in Hampton Roads, was named 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Daily Press; and
WHEREAS, the Citizen of the Year award recognizes individuals who strive to make the Virginia Peninsula a better place to live and work by addressing the causes of poverty, mentoring the youth of the community, or making neighborhoods safer; and
WHEREAS, a native of Puerto Rico, Marie Boyd grew up in a military family and settled in the Denbigh area of Virginia Beach; she graduated from Menchville High School and furthered her education at Peninsula Academy of Criminal Justice and Thomas Nelson Community College; and
WHEREAS, Marie Boyd worked in law enforcement and served as a paralegal before becoming the volunteer chaplain of the Newport News Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, possessed of a desire to enhance the quality of life of her fellow residents, Marie Boyd created Saving People and Recycling Kindness (SPARK) to distribute donated furniture and clothing to those in need; and
WHEREAS, Marie Boyd expanded the SPARK program and established the Hampton Roads Good Samaritan Fund as a nonprofit organization in 2008; she facilitates and encourages community service by connecting members of the community in need with people who want to help; and
WHEREAS, with the Hampton Roads Good Samaritan Fund, Marie Boyd delivers donated furniture, appliances, clothing, and other items to local residents and helps pay for utility bills or home repairs in emergencies; in 2012, the organization raised more than $66,000 in donations; and
WHEREAS, Marie Boyd and her husband, Wesley, have three daughters, Kristina, Elizabeth, and Meredith, all of whom enthusiastically support Marie Boyd’s service to the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Marie Boyd hereby be commended on being named 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Daily Press; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marie Boyd as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for her legacy of service to the Hampton Roads community.
