HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 313
Commending Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 27, 2015

 

WHEREAS, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach celebrates 100 years of spiritual leadership and community outreach in 2015; and

WHEREAS, Star of the Sea Catholic Church began as a mission parish for residents of and visitors to Virginia Beach, and it was officially established as an affiliate of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in 1915; and

WHEREAS, in its early years, Star of the Sea Catholic Church had a congregation of 25 families under Philip Brennan, the church’s first pastor, who served for more than three decades; the regular congregation had nearly doubled by 1918; and

WHEREAS, in 1958, Star of the Sea Catholic Church built the Star of the Sea Catholic School to serve the youth of the community; the school has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence; and

WHEREAS, Star of the Sea Catholic Church carried out renovations to better serve the growing congregation in 1995, and a new parish hall was completed in 2007; and

WHEREAS, the congregation of Star of the Sea Catholic Church will commemorate the church’s 100th anniversary with mass and a special celebration on August 15, 2015; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Star of the Sea Catholic Church hereby be commended for its contributions to and spiritual leadership of the residents of Virginia Beach on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Esteban DeLeon, pastor of Star of the Sea Catholic Church, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the church’s long tradition of service to the community.
