HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 288
Commending Congressional Schools of Virginia.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 26, 2015

 

WHEREAS, during the 2014 - 2015 academic year, Congressional Schools of Virginia in Falls Church celebrates its 75th anniversary of preparing children to embrace the opportunities and responsibilities they will face as global citizens; and

WHEREAS, Congressional Schools of Virginia was founded in Arlington in 1939 for children ages three to five, and added grades one through four a year later; by the 1950s, Congressional School educated pupils through the eighth grade; and

WHEREAS, during the first 20 years of its existence, Congressional Schools moved several times; in 1960, having grown to include grades nine through 12, a new campus opened on Sleepy Hollow Road in Falls Church; and

WHEREAS, in 1979, when the institution was reorganized, its name was changed to Congressional Schools of Virginia, and the upper school was phased out in the mid-1980s, with the final class graduating in 1987; today, the school, which serves children from infancy through eighth grade, is thriving; and

WHEREAS, the diverse student population at the Congressional Schools of Virginia is part of an enriching learning environment; additionally, the school works to develop a strong partnership with parents; and

WHEREAS, the modern facilities of the Congressional Schools of Virginia include a gymnasium/auditorium and two technology centers; each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and many interactive media and virtual classroom tools; and

WHEREAS, Congressional Schools of Virginia features early childhood, lower, and middle school programs in a dynamic learning environment; the school also has summer camp programs with a variety of academic, athletic, and other specialty offerings; and

WHEREAS, the courses offered at Congressional Schools of Virginia continually evolve and expand; speech and drama classes have recently been introduced in the middle school, and students also can participate in many extracurricular activities, clubs, and teams; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Congressional Schools of Virginia in Falls Church hereby be commended on the occasion of its 75th anniversary during the 2014 - 2015 academic year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Janet F. Marsh, executive director of the Congressional Schools of Virginia, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for its many years of success in preparing children to embrace the opportunities and responsibilities they will face as global citizens and best wishes for the future.
