HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 287
Commending the Lions Club of Falls Church.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 26, 2015

 

WHEREAS, the Lions Club of Falls Church celebrates its 75th anniversary of service to the community and the Commonwealth in 2015; and

WHEREAS, the Lions Club of Falls Church, chartered in 1940, is the oldest service organization in Falls Church; it was founded by a group of young professionals who wished to join together to volunteer in the community and share in service activities; and

WHEREAS, the Arlington Host Lions Club sponsored the Falls Church club, and on May 28, 1940, at the Washington Golf & Country Club, the Lions Club of Falls Church was chartered; its 20 founding members were led by the president, Burns N. Gibson, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, the Lions Club of Falls Church first met in a room provided by Burns Gibson at his combined motel, restaurant, and service station; over the years, meetings have been held at other clubs and at restaurants; the club currently meets monthly at the Italian Café in Falls Church; and

WHEREAS, between 1945 and 1965, the Lions Club of Falls Church sponsored five additional Lions clubs in the area—the Mt. Vernon, Centreville, Manassas, Herndon, and Merrifield Lions clubs all were offshoots of the Falls Church club; and

WHEREAS, the motto of Lions clubs is “We Serve”; the members of the Lions Club of Falls Church have supported many worthwhile efforts and organizations during the last 75 years, including helping to establish the Child Development Center; and

WHEREAS, the Lions Club of Falls Church donated more than $60,000 to the Child Development Center, which has helped make the center a model for similar facilities throughout the United States; much of the money the club has raised comes from a golf tournament and from citrus sales; and

WHEREAS, additionally, the Lions Club of Falls Church has donated thousands of dollars to organizations that help blind persons and to the Falls Church Volunteer Fire Department and youth sports organizations; the club also is known for its work to provide eyeglasses and eye exams to less fortunate people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Lions Club of Falls Church hereby be commended on the occasion of its 75th anniversary in 2015; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the president of the Lions Club of Falls Church as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations for its many years of dedicated service to the community and the Commonwealth.
