HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 266
Commending the Sinfonicron Light Opera Company.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 25, 2015

 

WHEREAS, in 2014 – 2015, the Sinfonicron Light Opera Company, a student theater group at The College of William and Mary, celebrates its 50th anniversary of producing theater that enchants audiences and enriches the community; and

WHEREAS, the student-run theater group in Williamsburg mounts a full-scale theatrical production each year; in January, for its golden jubilee, Sinfonicron players staged Pirates of Penzance, an enduringly popular operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan; and

WHEREAS, Sinfonicron was formed in 1964 and is a partnership of four student organizations at The College of William and Mary: Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Delta Omicron music fraternity, Nu Kappa Epsilon music sorority, and the Student Theater Organization; and

WHEREAS, Sinfonicron productions are the main fundraising vehicle for the student groups and the proceeds from the shows help support the arts; Sinfonicron stages a play each January in a rotating three-year schedule of two Gilbert and Sullivan plays and one non-Gilbert and Sullivan show; and

WHEREAS, each winter, the students who are involved in Sinfonicron’s production give up two weeks of their break between semesters and return to campus for a whirlwind of preparation and rehearsals; and

WHEREAS, over the years, the Williamsburg community has strongly supported the theatrical company and the size of the endeavor also has grown from the Little Theatre in the basement of the Campus Center to the main theater of Phi Beta Kappa Hall, where Sinfonicron’s performances of the Pirates of Penzance were staged in 2015; and

WHEREAS, in the last 50 years, the Sinfonicron players have staged The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Yeomen of the Guard, and other operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan; the group’s repertoire also includes Evita, West Side Story, Into the Woods, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and City of Angels; and

WHEREAS, five performances of Pirates of Penzance were staged for Sinfonicron’s 50th anniversary season; and

WHEREAS, Sinfonicron’s golden jubilee performance was held on the evening of January 24, 2015; all Sinfonicron alumni and friends were invited, as were members of the Sinfonicron Guild, a group of supporters of the light opera company; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Sinfonicron Light Opera Company of The College of William and Mary hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary during 2014 – 2015 for producing theater that enchants audiences and enriches the community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kathryn Knoerl, producer of the Sinfonicron Light Opera Company, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for creating a lasting musical theater tradition that is enjoyed by The College of William and Mary and the greater Williamsburg community.
