HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 254
Offered February 18, 2015
Commending Benjamin A. Vaughan.
----------
Patron-- Morris
----------

WHEREAS, Benjamin A. Vaughan, head coach of the Isle of Wight Academy boys’ basketball team, celebrated his 600th victory on January 23, 2015, becoming one of only three high school basketball coaches in the Commonwealth to achieve that milestone; and

WHEREAS, Benjamin “Benny” A. Vaughan is a leader on and off the basketball court at Isle of Wight Academy; he has worked at the school for 44 years, first as a teacher and guidance counselor, and for the past 25 years, as headmaster of the school, which offers pre-kindergarten through 12th grade; and

WHEREAS, Benjamin Vaughan was quick to credit the hard work and talent of the basketball players he has coached over the years for his achievement; he began coaching at Isle of Wight Academy in 1970 and has become the only private-school coach in the Commonwealth to win 600 games; and

WHEREAS, combining two roles at Isle of Wight Academy—headmaster and head coach—gives Benny Vaughan the opportunity to better know his students; establishing connections with his charges through involvement in sports has been a major reason he has coached for so long; and

WHEREAS, Benny Vaughan provided valuable guidance to many players who recall the lessons he taught—the value of preparation, organization, and competitiveness, and how those values should always be tempered with humility and a focus on faith and family; and

WHEREAS, in recent years, some graduates have returned to the school as assistant coaches, and as adults they continued to benefit from Benny Vaughan’s mentoring and advice; the coach now frequently coaches the sons of former players at Isle of Wight Academy; and

WHEREAS, as basketball coach at Isle of Wight Academy for 39 years, Benny Vaughan has been an esteemed role model for the entire school community; a banner recognizing his teams’ 600 wins hangs in the school gymnasium, and the basketball court has been named in his honor; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Benjamin A. Vaughan, boys’ basketball coach and headmaster of Isle of Wight Academy, hereby be commended on the occasion of his 600th win as coach; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Benjamin A. Vaughan as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration on his outstanding accomplishment as a coach and for his work to educate and develop young people of character both in the classroom and on the court.
