Commending Robert Bent.

WHEREAS, Robert Bent has worked tirelessly to enhance the lives of his fellow disabled veterans and their families in the Commonwealth for more than 28 years; and

WHEREAS, Robert “Bob” Bent served his country in the United States Army; joining the military as an enlisted private, he served in combat during the Vietnam War and retired as a decorated lieutenant colonel; and

WHEREAS, although injured in the line of duty, Bob Bent continued his service to his fellow veterans as a volunteer, working with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV); and

WHEREAS, Bob Bent served in leadership positions in the local DAV chapter and Department of Virginia DAV and at the national level as a member of the National Executive Committee; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, Bob Bent developed and organized the DAV Department of Virginia Service Commission, which he has led as chair; and

WHEREAS, Bob Bent also directs and supervises the DAV transportation program in the Commonwealth, a program that has provided over 125,300 veterans with free transportation to Veterans Health Administration Medical Centers since 1987; and

WHEREAS, as chair, Bob Bent has directed the Local Veterans Assistance Program, which has facilitated over 650,000 hours of volunteer time to assist disabled veterans in Virginia since 2010; and

WHEREAS, Bob Bent has been a mentor, advisor, and confidant to more than 25 Department of Virginia DAV commanders, chapter commanders, and untold numbers of disabled veterans; and

WHEREAS; Bob Bent is known across the nation by DAV members as “Mr. DAV” for his tireless advocacy for disabled veterans and families, including those veterans incarcerated in correctional facilities or facing serious legal issues; and

WHEREAS, after 28 years as chair of the DAV Department of Virginia Service Commission, Bob Bent is relinquishing his post to pursue other opportunities within the DAV; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Robert Bent hereby be commended for his service to the Commonwealth as chair of the Disabled American Veterans Department of Virginia Service Commission; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert Bent as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his dedication and contributions to disabled veterans and their families in the Commonwealth.
