2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dwight S. Newingham, a pastor, counselor, leader, and mentor to thousands of people, who served for 24 years as executive director of the Gathering of Men, a faith-based organization headquartered in Newport News, retired on December 31, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Dwight S. “Ike” Newingham has worked in several faith-based ministries in his career; he was manager of Youth for Christ in Newport News for many years, working with high school students, and also was regional and national training director of the organization; and
WHEREAS, in addition to introducing young people to Christian teaching and practices, Ike Newingham was director of Christ Together on the Peninsula, which brought pastors and their churches together for fellowship and service, with a goal of transforming the lives of Peninsula residents; and
WHEREAS, for more than 40 years, Ike Newingham helped plan and host the annual Commonwealth Prayer Breakfast, through the Virginia Fellowship; each year at the General Assembly, elected officials and citizens of the Commonwealth gather for worship, prayer, and guidance; and
WHEREAS, in his role at the Gathering of Men, Ike Newingham’s care and compassion has been felt by thousands of men as they sought spiritual leadership and empowerment to guide their actions into becoming the best they can be; and
WHEREAS, through the Gathering of Men, Ike Newingham has hosted marriage and parenting seminars that were attended by more than 15,000 people, and outreach breakfast programs that reached more than 13,000 people; and
WHEREAS, on a personal level, Ike Newingham has worked with people seeking help with substance abuse issues, and also has counseled thousands of people at no charge; for more than four decades, he has been a mentor to many young men; and
WHEREAS, Ike Newingham has led small group leadership sessions and sponsored seminars on issues important to men, such as fatherhood, discipleship, and meaningful success; he also has taken part in family life conferences, faith-based crusades, and Christian concerts; and
WHEREAS, by example and deed, Ike Newingham encouraged all those with whom he came in contact to consider the role of faith in their lives, and he has supported and empowered people to live confident and purposeful lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Dwight S. Newingham hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement as executive director of the Gathering of Men, and for his work as a pastor, counselor, leader, and mentor to thousands of people; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dwight S. Newingham as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his unwavering faith and dedication to helping all people.
