2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Irving Althaus, a well-known businessman and a respected member of the Newport News community, died on July 14, 2014; and
WHEREAS, a native of Ciechanów, Poland, Irving Althaus endured several years in Nazi concentration camps during World War II; later in life, he would proudly participate in Holocaust survivor documentation projects, sharing his experiences to increase awareness and provide support to fellow survivors; and
WHEREAS, Irving Althaus immigrated to the United States after the war and became an American citizen in 1954; upon arriving, he used his training as an electrician to serve the community by wiring several homes in the Warwick Garden neighborhood of Newport News; and
WHEREAS, in the 1950s, Irving Althaus ran a newsstand outside Antine’s Luncheonette, then worked with his cousin as the manager of Althaus Delicatessen and Caterers until his retirement in 1997; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his 46-year career, Irving Althaus became a well-known member of the community, providing delicious food for wedding receptions, family reunions, and other gatherings; he built many lifelong friendships and left a good impression on everyone he met; and
WHEREAS, admired for his hard work, positivity, and zest for life, Irving Althaus will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Irving Althaus, a successful businessman and beloved member of the Newport News community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Irving Althaus as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
