2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Danny Hunley, who had worked at Newport News Shipbuilding since 1974, starting as a welder trainee, retired as vice president of operations on December 31, 2014, after a 40-year career with the Commonwealth’s largest industrial employer; and
WHEREAS, a resident of Mathews County, Danny Hunley had no long-term plan to stay at the shipyard when he first began working there, but his potential soon became evident to his supervisors, and over the years, he was entrusted with numerous responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, Newport News Shipbuilding, which is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc., is the nation’s sole designer, builder, and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers; the company also designs and builds nuclear-powered submarines and commercial ships; and
WHEREAS, earlier in his career, Danny Hunley served as director for trades, education, and training at Newport News Shipbuilding; he also was program manager of the international product tanker construction program and was department head of industrial measurement, accuracy control, ship fitters, and welders; and
WHEREAS, Danny Hunley became vice president for trades, education, and training in 2005; as vice president of operations, he was responsible for production labor resources and processes, plant engineering and maintenance, waterfront support services, training, instructional design, and The Apprentice School; and
WHEREAS, under Danny Hunley’s leadership, the shipbuilding company built a new state-of-the-art Apprentice School in downtown Newport News; the school opened in 2012, and in addition to learning a trade, apprentices also can pursue a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University; and
WHEREAS, there was a sea change in the methods and construction processes used at Newport News Shipbuilding during Danny Hunley’s four decades at the vast complex along the James River; slide rules were essential tools in the 1970s, and the earliest calculators cost a week’s salary; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Danny Hunley observed how the use of cutting-edge technology such as 3-D modeling and optically guided measurements helped the 23,000 employees at Newport News Shipbuilding build and maintain the highly specialized and complex vessels that make up the country’s nuclear-powered fleet, a vital component of our nation’s military might; and
WHEREAS, Danny Hunley, who graduated from The Apprentice School and Saint Leo University, received the prestigious Tenneco Leadership Award, the Newport News Shipbuilding President’s Model of Excellence Award for leadership, and other recognitions during his career; and
WHEREAS, Danny Hunley was a demanding and caring supervisor who also was a voice for the craftsman; he often demonstrated great compassion and was admired for showing others what traits are necessary to be a respected and visionary leader; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Danny Hunley hereby be commended for his 40 years of service to Newport News Shipbuilding, from his start as a welder trainee in 1974 to retiring as vice president of operations at the Commonwealth’s largest industrial employer; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Danny Hunley as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his leadership at one of the Commonwealth’s largest industries—an integral part of the nation’s defense capabilities—and best wishes in retirement.
