WHEREAS, in 2015, Binford Middle School in Richmond celebrates its 100th anniversary of working to develop and provide the finest educational program to meet the changing needs of its students and staff; and

WHEREAS, the school was named for James H. Binford, who served from 1870 to 1876 as the first superintendent of Richmond Public Schools; it was the fifth junior high school in the United States, reflecting the growing national support of the junior high school concept; and

WHEREAS, when the doors to Binford Middle School first opened in 1915, the school had a staff of approximately 35 and an enrollment of 500 students, who were under the supervision of Joseph Sanders, the school’s first principal; and

WHEREAS, throughout its storied history, the vision of the faculty and staff of Binford Middle School has been to develop lifelong learners who continue to grow as responsible citizens; the entire school community is committed to meeting the changing needs of students and their families; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Binford Middle School is to provide high-quality, nurturing educational experiences so that each student is challenged to achieve his full potential; high expectations and best practices are established for each child, and collaboration and engagement are key objectives; and

WHEREAS, the faculty and staff of Binford Middle School help each student develop academically, socially, and psychologically and focus on preparing young people to succeed in high school and adulthood, contribute to society, earn a living through worthwhile and satisfying work, and live with dignity in a complex and changing world; and

WHEREAS, the staff at Binford Middle School also motivate students to develop responsibility, self-reliance, and positive moral values; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Binford Middle School in Richmond on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the principal of Binford Middle School as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for its storied history and best wishes for the future.
