Celebrating the life of Thelma Anthony Jones-Hawthorne.

WHEREAS, Thelma Anthony Jones-Hawthorne of Richmond, a woman of faith who was active in many church ministries and other civic and charitable organizations, a joyful and loving person, and a devoted wife and mother, died on December 21, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne was a native of Bluefield, West Virginia, and graduated from Elkhorn High School in Elkhorn, West Virginia, where she was a cheerleader and an athlete; she moved to Richmond with her sister, Juanita, to attend Virginia Union University; and

WHEREAS, in addition to attending college, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne became a fashion model and worked at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, now part of Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where she met her future husband, James Stephen Jones, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne and her husband began raising a family after he returned from serving in the United States military during World War II; she was a dedicated housewife and mother and also taught children at a nearby recreation center; and

WHEREAS, while her children were young, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne was actively involved in youth organizations; she was a den mother of a Boy Scout troop, a troop leader with the Girl Scouts of the USA, and a leader of a school parent-teacher association; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne entered the work force when her oldest child started college; she later studied to be a nursing assistant and worked in several convalescent homes and rehabilitation centers; and

WHEREAS, known as a joyful and fun-loving person, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne loved dancing, telling jokes, and socializing with friends and neighbors; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne was a faithful and active member of the Sixth Baptist Church, where she served with the culinary ministry and church aid workers and was a charter member of the ladies auxiliary ushers board; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Jones-Hawthorne, who was preceded in death by her first husband, James Stephen Jones, Sr., and by her second husband, Predzel Hawthorne, Sr., will be fondly remembered by her children, Sandra, Yvonne, Sheila, Ronald, and Lawrence, and their families, and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Thelma Anthony Jones-Hawthorne of Richmond, a woman of faith who was active in many church ministries and other civic and charitable organizations, a joyful and loving person, and a devoted wife and mother; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thelma Anthony Jones-Hawthorne as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
