2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, William Crosby Hairston, who has ably served as a member of the Ridgeway Town Council for 36 years, retired in 2014; and
WHEREAS, William Hairston was first elected to the Ridgeway Town Council on May 2, 1978; for much of his time as a member of the town council, he also served as vice mayor of the town in Henry County; and
WHEREAS, during his more than three decades of service to the people of Ridgeway, William Hairston has played a key role in many developments; the town received a Community Development Block Grant enabling it to rehabilitate 20 housing units, demolish one structure, and install water and sewer lines as well as a 3-inch main and a duplex pump station; and
WHEREAS, additionally, in 2001, during William Hairston’s tenure on the Ridgeway Town Council, the town adopted a zoning ordinance and established a Zoning Board and a Board of Zoning Appeals; and
WHEREAS, William Hairston and the Ridgeway Town Council adopted a Comprehensive Plan for Ridgeway, and a major improvement to the town’s infrastructure—the replacement of a bridge on U.S. Route 220S Business—also occurred during his tenure as a member of the town’s governing body; and
WHEREAS, while William Hairston served on the Ridgeway Town Council, the town became the owner of an existing park; Ridgeway Town Park now features a gazebo, playground equipment, picnic tables, and electrical improvements also have been made; and
WHEREAS, during William Hairston’s service on the town council, two holiday festivals have been established at Ridgeway Town Park, and three “Welcome to Ridgeway” signs were installed at entrances to the town; and
WHEREAS, in addition to being a dedicated public servant, William Hairston has further served the community as an active member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he has held many leadership positions; he also has been a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 178 for 25 years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend William Crosby Hairston, a member of the Ridgeway Town Council for 36 years, on the occasion of his retirement in 2014; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William Crosby Hairston as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his many years of dedicated public service to the Town of Ridgeway and the Commonwealth.
