HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 938
Celebrating the life of Zora M. McCall Brownell.

WHEREAS, Zora M. McCall Brownell of Loudoun County, a selfless and devoted community leader who believed that volunteerism is a central tenant of the American ideal, died on March 12, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, Zora M. McCall “Mac” Brownell worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and volunteered with the USO during World War II; she married her husband, Jim, on April 1, 1945; and

WHEREAS, in 1959, Mac Brownell and her family moved to a dairy farm in Bluemont, where she began to build an incomparable legacy of service to the residents of Loudoun County; and

WHEREAS, Mac Brownell served as the director of volunteers at Loudoun Memorial Hospital from 1973 to 1980, declining any pay for the salaried position; she also chaired the Loudoun County Red Cross and served on the board of directors of the American Red Cross; and

WHEREAS, Mac Brownell was most passionate about supporting seniors in Loudoun County; she worked with the Loudoun County Commission on Aging and was instrumental in the creation of the Carver Senior Center; and

WHEREAS, as the longtime chair of the Friends of Loudoun Adult Day Care Centers, Mac Brownell raised funds through Nancy’s Cookies to establish adult care facilities in Leesburg and Sterling; and

WHEREAS, Mac Brownell also donated her time and wise leadership to several other organizations, boards, committees, and commissions at the local and state levels; she earned many awards and accolades for her tireless and benevolent service; and

WHEREAS, Mac Brownell enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Purcellville, where she served as a ruling elder; and

WHEREAS, Mac Brownell will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Jim; children, James, Mark, and Scott, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Zora M. McCall Brownell, a pillar of the Loudoun County community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Zora M. McCall Brownell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
