2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2009, the Dickenson County School Board, facing drastic budget cuts, declining enrollment, decreased curriculum offerings, and the costs of maintaining 50-year-old buildings, came together with the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors and the Industrial Development Authority to actively seek funding for the construction of new school facilities; and
WHEREAS, with the active involvement of the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers, a plan was developed to consolidate three high schools (Clintwood High School, Ervinton High School, and Haysi High School), the Dickenson County Career Center, and all middle school students on one centrally located campus named Ridgeview; and
WHEREAS, the priorities for the design of Ridgeview were to provide Dickenson County’s children with a safe environment that would allow them to obtain a high-quality 21st century education and to be a source of pride and inspiration for the community; and
WHEREAS, Ridgeview will utilize local natural gas from within Dickenson County along with other designs and machinery that will enable Ridgeview to serve as an emergency shelter for the community in the event of any weather related emergency or other catastrophic event; and
WHEREAS, in August 2015, Ridgeview will open and offer a wide variety of state-of-the-art instructional, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities to the children of Dickenson County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dickenson County for developing a quality educational program and inspiring school facilities to better serve local students; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dickenson County as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for what a community can accomplish when it works together in unison for the greater good.
