WHEREAS, in 2014, Samir N. Saliba, the longest-serving faculty member of Emory & Henry College in Washington County, received the William and Martha DeFriece Award for his 50 years of exceptional service to and leadership of the college; and

WHEREAS, a native of Lebanon, Samir Saliba earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Tulane University; in 1964, he joined the faculty of Emory & Henry College, where he established the Political Science Department and served as department chair from 1968 to 1972 and 1985 to 2005; and

WHEREAS, also serving as chair of the Division of Social Sciences, Samir Saliba was responsible for setting the division’s high academic standards and hired several notable faculty members; and

WHEREAS, as dean of faculty from 1972 to 1984, Samir Saliba was the second-longest serving dean in the history of the college; he developed a new curriculum that emphasized the emerging concept of globalization and worked with other private colleges in the Commonwealth to create the Tuition Assistance Grant; and

WHEREAS, Samir Saliba also served as interim president of the college from 1972 to 1973, has served as the advisor for the pre-law program since 1984, and is the director of the Center for International Studies at Emory & Henry College; he has held the titles of Hawthorne Professor of Political Science and Meyung-Alley Professor of International Studies; and

WHEREAS, Samir Saliba has earned many other awards and accolades for his visionary teaching methods and support for his students and fellow faculty members; the Samir N. Saliba Endowment for International Education at Emory & Henry College is named in his honor; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Samir N. Saliba on receiving the 2014 William and Martha DeFriece Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Samir N. Saliba as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his exceptional legacy of service to the Emory & Henry College community.
