Commending Jim Golden.

WHEREAS, Jim Golden, a dedicated educator, decorated veteran, and respected businessman, retired as the vice president for strategic initiatives at The College of William and Mary in 2014; and

WHEREAS, after graduating fourth in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Jim Golden earned a master’s degree and doctorate from Harvard University; he served his country during the Vietnam War as an artillery commander; and

WHEREAS, mentoring a new generation of military leaders, Jim Golden served as a professor and the head of the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy at West Point for seven years, including a year as a Fulbright Professor in Germany; and

WHEREAS, Jim Golden also served several United States presidents as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors; he retired from the army as a brigadier general after a distinguished 31-year military career, then served as executive director of corporate technology and innovation and executive assistant to the chair and chief executive officer at Tenneco, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Jim Golden joined The College of William and Mary in 1999 as director, then associate vice president of economic development and corporate affairs; in 2008, he took on the newly created mantle of vice president for strategic initiatives; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure at The College of William and Mary, Jim Golden played a critical role in numerous projects, including development of a strategic planning process, reorganization of campus communications, establishment of the Technology and Business Center, creation of the VIMS-Industry Partnership Committee, coordination of the New Town development, creation of the William and Mary Real Estate Foundation, and planning for Tribe Square; and

WHEREAS, Jim Golden has also worked to enhance the quality of life of Williamsburg residents as the chair of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance and treasurer of the Williamsburg Health Foundation; and

WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Jim Golden will continue to serve The College of William and Mary as a senior counselor to the president and coordinate training initiatives through the United States Army’s Training and Doctrine Command; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jim Golden on the occasion of his retirement as vice president for strategic initiatives at The College of William and Mary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jim Golden as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his many contributions to The College of William and Mary community and service to the Commonwealth.
