Celebrating the life of the Honorable John Brooks Curry II.

WHEREAS, the Honorable John Brooks Curry II, a former chief judge of the 25th Judicial District of Virginia and a tireless community leader and volunteer in Waynesboro, died on February 1, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Waynesboro, John Curry graduated from Waynesboro High School and attended Bridgewater College before earning a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, John Curry earned a law degree from Memphis State University, where he was president of the student bar association, then returned to Virginia to practice civil and criminal law, becoming an attorney for Clifton Forge and Covington and serving as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney; and

WHEREAS, in 1980, John Curry became a judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of the 25th Judicial District of Virginia; he presided with great fairness and wisdom for 23 years, including six years as a chief judge of the 25th Judicial District of Virginia, until his retirement in 2003; and

WHEREAS, John Curry was a strong advocate for young people in Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County, striving to make the region a better place to live for children and families throughout his career; and

WHEREAS, working to enhance the quality of life of his fellow Waynesboro residents, John Curry served as president of the Waynesboro Rotary Club and was a member of the Stonewall Jackson Boy Scout Council and numerous other civic and service organizations; and

WHEREAS, John Curry was also an active member and supporter of the local YMCA, and he supported the arts as capital committee chair for the Wayne Theatre Alliance, helping to raise more than $4 million for the alliance since 2007; and

WHEREAS, John Curry has most recently served the community as the founder and president of Blue Ridge Mediation, and he mentored student mediators as a mock trial judge at the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, John Curry served the Commonwealth and the community with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and distinction; he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable John Brooks Curry II, a former chief judge of the 25th Judicial District of Virginia and a pillar of the Waynesboro community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable John Brooks Curry II as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
