WHEREAS, Sister Grace Malonzo was inducted into the Circle of Saints by the Portsmouth Catholic Regional School for her life of good deeds in service to the Portsmouth community and people in need throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, a native of Washington, D.C., Christina Grace Malonzo grew up in Portsmouth and graduated from Saint Paul’s High School (now Portsmouth Catholic Regional School); she joined the Daughters of Wisdom, taking her vows in 1960, and later graduated from a nursing program at Maryview Medical Center, where she had volunteered from a young age; and
WHEREAS, in the 1960s, Sister Grace cultivated her passion for missionary work, traveling to Malawi, Central East Africa, Haiti, and the Philippines; she returned to Portsmouth in 1970 and worked at Maryview Medical Center and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth; and
WHEREAS, in 1977, Sister Grace joined the Pastoral Care Department of Maryview Medical Center and later earned a certification as a chaplain from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains; and
WHEREAS, after her well-earned retirement in 2004, Sister Grace continued to serve and comfort members of the community in need; she helps distribute tray favors to patients at Maryview Medical Center and even traveled again to the Philippines in 2010; and
WHEREAS, throughout her life, Sister Grace has brought joy and comfort to the ill and the less fortunate, earning the respect and gratitude of her peers, as well as the individuals whose lives she has touched; and
WHEREAS, Sister Grace was honored by Portsmouth Catholic Regional School and the City of Portsmouth on January 9, 2015, which was proclaimed Sister Grace Malonzo’s Service Appreciation Day; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Sister Grace Malonzo on being inducted into the Circle of Saints by Portsmouth Catholic Regional School; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sister Grace Malonzo as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her kindness, compassion, and dedicated service to the community.
