15103797DWHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School, a public school in Alexandria, has promoted pride, perseverance, and positivity among its students and the community for almost five decades; and
WHEREAS, established in 1966, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School serves more than 700 students in preschool, Head Start, and kindergarten through sixth grade; with more than 130 faculty and staff members, the school works to provide a high-quality educational experience; and
WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School uses the Positive Behavior Intervention Support and Responsive Classroom model, a nationally recognized approach, to foster a strong sense of community and create a safe environment in which students can learn and grow; and
WHEREAS, engaging parents and family members of students, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School offers family nights, quarterly family field trips, monthly workshops, and opportunities to volunteer; and
WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School supports its teachers through job-embedded professional development, with an emphasis on implementation of guided reading and mathematics workshops; and
WHEREAS, technology is a crucial tool for Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School students; the school uses interactive Smart Boards, document cameras, and mobile labs to enhance the learning experience and partnered with Fairfax County Public Schools to offer an after-school computer learning program for students and parents; and
WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School maintains partnerships with Alfred Baptist Church, which offers mentoring programs and is helping the school build its first science lab, and Kaiser Permanente, which facilitates the physical and mental health of students and staff; and
WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School offers numerous clubs and sports teams, including the running club, student leadership academy, and robotics team; and
WHEREAS, Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School also hosts special events to support student learning, including Super Science Saturday, Kindergarten Transition Camp, a science fair, and after-school programs; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s contributions to the community and dedication to giving students a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
