WHEREAS, the Fairfax Young Democrats, a civic and social club based in Merrifield, received the 2014 Chapter of the Year Award from the Virginia Young Democrats for the club’s efforts to promote civic engagement and community leadership among young residents of Fairfax County and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church; and
WHEREAS, with a membership of nearly 150 high school and college students and young professionals in the Fairfax area, the Fairfax Young Democrats participate in valuable community service efforts and encourage residents to fulfill their civic duty to vote; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Young Democrats previously helped institute absentee voting initiatives for college-age voters that are still in use today; and
WHEREAS, in 2013 and early 2014, the Fairfax Young Democrats participated in the Stuff the Bus food drive and collected and distributed toys for children at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter; the group also supported the democratic process by providing hundreds of volunteer hours to local candidates and helping almost 200 high school students vote; and
WHEREAS, many current and former members of the Fairfax Young Democrats have gone on to become leaders in their communities; members of local and state boards and commissions; members and officers of local, state, and national civic organizations; or public servants; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Fairfax Young Democrats on receiving the 2014 Chapter of the Year Award; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Fairfax Young Democrats as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the group’s efforts to promote civic engagement and community leadership among the youth of the Fairfax area.
