HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 859
Commending the Reverend George M. Wilson.

WHEREAS, the Reverend George M. Wilson, a devoted spiritual and community leader in the City of Danville, has supported local youths as a member and chair of the Danville Public Schools School Board for 17 years; and

WHEREAS, a native of Mayesville, South Carolina, George Wilson graduated from Johnson C. Smith University and Theological Seminary and earned a doctorate in ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, after completing his education, George Wilson pastored churches throughout South Carolina and served as commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church; he later served as a moderator of the Presbytery in southern Virginia and chaired the Division of Mission in the Synod of the Piedmont; and

WHEREAS, George Wilson was also a member of the steering committee of what is now the Black Presbyterian Caucus and served as president of the southeast region; he retired from Holbrook Street Presbyterian Church in Danville in 2001; and

WHEREAS, deeply respected by his peers, Reverend Wilson is an active member of the Virginia School Boards Association; he has worked to inspire students to become responsible citizens and leaders in their communities and received the Award of Distinction from the Virginia School Boards Association; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Reverend George M. Wilson, an admired spiritual leader and community servant in Danville; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend George M. Wilson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service to the youth of the Danville community.
