HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 853
Commending the National Association of Social Workers Virginia Chapter.

WHEREAS, the National Association of Social Workers Virginia Chapter works to facilitate the professional growth and development of social workers and create and maintain standards to ensure high-quality service to Virginians in need; and

WHEREAS, the primary goal of social work is to enhance the well-being of community members and help meet the basic needs of all people, especially the most vulnerable members of society; and

WHEREAS, Social Work Pioneers, members of the National Association of Social Workers who have made innovative and valuable contributions to the field, have promoted social justice and paved the way for positive social change; and

WHEREAS, social workers recognize that more must be done to address persistent social problems and apply their research and advocacy skills to transform community needs into local, state, and national priorities; and

WHEREAS, social workers put the ideals of citizenship into action every day through legislative, regulatory, and social policy victories; and

WHEREAS, social workers support diverse families in every community, understanding that individuals and communities can work together to bring about positive change; and

WHEREAS, social workers strive to improve the rights of women, African Americans, ethnic minorities, and other disenfranchised communities; and

WHEREAS, social workers know from experience that discrimination of any kind limits human potential and must be eliminated; and

WHEREAS, social workers also know that poverty and trauma can create lifelong social and economic disadvantages and strive to help individuals overcome these factors and build stronger communities; and

WHEREAS, the National Association of Social Workers celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2015; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the National Association of Social Workers Virginia Chapter hereby be commended for its advocacy on issues affecting the practice of social work in Virginia, support for the Board of Social Work and schools of social work, and efforts to educate professionals on standards of practice within the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the National Association of Social Workers Virginia Chapter as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s work to pave the way for positive change in the Commonwealth.
