15104991DWHEREAS, Robin Douglas Davenport, principal of Creeds Elementary School in Virginia Beach, who has spent his professional career working for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools and is a tireless advocate for education, retires in 2015 after more than 40 years of service; and
WHEREAS, Robin Davenport’s roots run deep in the Blackwater section of Virginia Beach; he attended Creeds Elementary School as a child and lived nearby on farmland in what today is still a mostly rural community; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Floyd E. Kellam High School, Robin Davenport received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Wesleyan College and a master’s degree from Old Dominion University; he started teaching in January 1974 at Woodstock Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Robin Davenport taught third and fourth grades at Woodstock Elementary School until 1992; that year, he became assistant principal of Bettie F. Williams Elementary School, and in 1995, he was named assistant principal of Creeds Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, in 1998, Robin Davenport became principal of Creeds Elementary School, which is the oldest school in Virginia Beach; he was the first Virginia Beach City Public Schools alumnus to become an administrator at the school he attended as a child; and
WHEREAS, Robin Davenport has received many honors and accolades during a distinguished career; he received the School Bell Award from the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals and the City Manager’s Award recognizing Quality Service from the City of Virginia Beach; he also was honored as Creeds Man of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Creeds Elementary School has received many awards during Robin Davenport’s tenure; the school has been fully accredited since 2001, is a six-time winner of the Pearl School Award, and has received the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence four times; and
WHEREAS, Robin Davenport has made valuable contributions to area organizations; he is a longtime member of the Creeds Ruritan Club and has held many offices in the Ruritan organization, including serving as president of the Ruritan National Foundation in 2000; and
WHEREAS, Robin Davenport has provided advice and leadership as a member of the Boy Scouts of America Tidewater Council, a spokesman for the Virginia Farm Bureau on agriculture in the classroom, and a 30-year member of the board—and former cochair—of the Pungo Strawberry Festival, and he was named the 2013 Honorary Mayor of Pungo; and
WHEREAS, during his four decades in the field of elementary education, Robin Davenport has emphasized that school is a place where dreams are made and put into action—not only for students, but for the staff, parents, and the community—by creating a “Simply the Best” atmosphere; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Robin Douglas Davenport, who has worked for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools for more than 40 years, on the occasion of his retirement in 2015 as principal of Creeds Elementary School; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robin Douglas Davenport as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his dedication and service to the children of Virginia Beach and the Commonwealth.
