2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird High School football team claimed its third consecutive state title, winning the Virginia High School League Group 5A state championship on December 13, 2014; and
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks became only the eighth Virginia high school team to be crowned state champions in three consecutive years when they defeated the previously unbeaten Tuscarora High School Huskies 22 - 19 in the state final; and
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks defeated five previously unbeaten teams during the 2014 season, the last three during its playoff run; and
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks became the first Central Virginia high school to win three consecutive state championships since the Virginia High School League instituted football playoffs in 1970; and
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks’ defense was so strong that it held Gatorade Player of the Year running back Noah Reimers to a mere 129 yards; he had averaged over 200 yards per game during the season; and
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawk football team was not led by a couple of stars, but developed and worked as a cohesive unit, with each athlete playing an important role; and
WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawk football team was coached by a dedicated staff, led by head coach David Bedwell and assistant coaches Tony Nicely, John Curia, Clarence Lewis, Chamont Thompson, Aaron Alexander, Freddie Hall, Sal Camp, Ed Gore, Matt Bland, and Rusty Crostic; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Lloyd C. Bird High School football team on winning the 2014 Virginia High School League Group 5A state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David Bedwell, head coach of the Lloyd C. Bird High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on an outstanding and historic season.
