Commending Kenny Lewis.

WHEREAS, Kenny Lewis, an outstanding role model and public school teacher, coach, and administrator, who founded the Danville Church-Based Tutorial Program, was named the 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Danville; and

WHEREAS, Kenny Lewis is a native of Danville who returned to his hometown after a distinguished career in the National Football League; he is a graduate of George Washington High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, as a boy growing up in Danville, Kenny Lewis appreciated the support and encouragement he received from his family, friends, and neighbors, and he was deeply committed to giving back to the community; and

WHEREAS, Kenny Lewis returned to Danville in the mid-1980s after playing for the New York Jets; he was a track and football coach and taught health and physical education for nine years; in 1987, he received a master’s degree in public school administration from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Kenny Lewis then became a school administrator for many years, serving as an assistant principal and principal; he worked in middle schools and high schools and also was principal of Abundant Life Christian Academy; and

WHEREAS, before he retired in 2014, Kenny Lewis was director of student intervention services and was in charge of overseeing attendance and discipline for the Danville Public School District; and

WHEREAS, Kenny Lewis helped found the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Danville area, and he also established the Danville Church-Based Tutorial Program in 1996 as he was keenly aware of the need for after-school programs for school children in Danville and the surrounding area; and

WHEREAS, under Kenny Lewis’ leadership, the Danville Church-Based Tutorial Program has grown to include 30 churches in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and Caswell County, North Carolina; its mission is to provide quality educational services that will expand students’ knowledge and enhance their standard of living; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Kenny Lewis for being named the 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Danville and for serving as an outstanding role model, educator, and coach; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kenny Lewis as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his tireless and innovative efforts on behalf of students in the Dan River region and the Commonwealth.
