HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 824 Offered February 12, 2015 Celebrating the life of Garfield Ford Childs, Jr. ---------- Patrons-- McClellan; Senator: McEachin ----------

WHEREAS, Garfield Ford Childs, Jr., of Richmond, a respected and successful businessman and entrepreneur, a veteran of the United States military, a man of faith, and a devoted husband and father, died on December 14, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Garfield Childs was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and later moved to Richmond; he attended Armstrong High School and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School; and

WHEREAS, Garfield Childs earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University; he then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for four years before returning to Richmond, his home for the rest of his life; and

WHEREAS, Garfield Childs was primarily interested in accounting and business; he first worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a revenue agent, and later started Childs Business Services, where for more than 40 years he offered accounting and tax preparation services, developing a loyal clientele; and

WHEREAS, Garfield Childs was a hardworking and successful entrepreneur; he frequently kept late hours at his company, helping his customers—who often became his friends; in addition to owning a company, he worked as an accountant for the Defense Supply Center Richmond; and

WHEREAS, during a long and rewarding career with the federal government and in the private sector, Garfield Childs received several accolades for providing excellent service; he retired from the federal government in 2004; and

WHEREAS, when not busy at work, Garfield Childs enjoyed fishing and spending time with his friends and family; he also enjoyed fellowship and worship as a lifelong member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where he served on the Church Finance Committee; and

WHEREAS, Garfield Childs will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by Joyce, his wife of 49 years; his children, Robin, Renee, Rea, and Andrew, and their families; and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Garfield Ford Childs, Jr., of Richmond, a respected and successful businessman and entrepreneur, a veteran of the United States military, a man of faith, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Garfield Ford Childs, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
