Commending the Richmond Amateur Radio Club.

WHEREAS, the Richmond Amateur Radio Club, an organization that trains, unites, and supports licensed amateur radio operators in the Richmond area, celebrates 100 years of continuous operation in 2016; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1916, the Richmond Amateur Radio Club was originally known as the Tri County Radio Club; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators in the Richmond area and throughout the nation are dedicated to serving the public and promoting the art of radio; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators provide emergency communications in times of local and national disasters, using equipment they have personally acquired and maintained; and

WHEREAS, groups of licensed amateur radio operators build and maintain up-to-date radio networks to provide emergency communications; and

WHEREAS, many licensed amateur radio operators in the Richmond area volunteer to staff shelters and emergency centers in times of need; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators have historically provided message handling from around the world to connect families with members of the United States Armed Forces and others, before instant, worldwide communications devices were common; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators provide communications for local public service events such as walk-a-thons, Special Olympics, and others; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators provide classes, training, and testing for those seeking to obtain or to upgrade their FCC-issued Amateur Radio License; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators have often led the creation, expansion, and improvement of electrical systems and electronic devices over the years; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators help tie the world together by communicating with other radio operators around the globe and even the International Space Station and satellites; and

WHEREAS, licensed amateur radio operators have been recognized as the last line of defense for maintaining communication in emergency situations and a critical partner in disaster response by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Richmond Amateur Radio Club on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Richmond Amateur Radio Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the many contributions of licensed amateur radio operators to communities throughout the Commonwealth and the United States.
