2015 SESSION
15104678DWHEREAS, in 2015, the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club celebrates its 75th anniversary of fellowship, goodwill, and community service; its members adhere to the organization’s principles of diligence, pride, and ethics; and
WHEREAS, when the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club was first organized in November 1939, it met in a social hall in the basement of Stuarts Draft Elementary School; the club was chartered in April 1940 and had 24 members; and
WHEREAS, from its earliest days, the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club has played an active role in the town and the surrounding Augusta County community; it helped raise the funds needed to establish a cannery and also purchased stage curtains for the high school; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, members of the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club supported the war effort in many ways; the organization raised money to buy war stamps and defense bonds, and continued to support the cannery as local residents used the facility to can home-grown produce; and
WHEREAS, many successful projects focused on improving the community; the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club purchased fire trucks, sponsored a parent-teacher association for the public schools, and helped pay for showers in the boys’ washroom; and
WHEREAS, over the years, the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club has hosted many successful community events, including horse shows, a 4-H Fat Stock show, a soap box derby, and fundraising dinners; and
WHEREAS, in 1989, the members of the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club opened a park on land that had been donated to the club; the park featured two lighted ball fields, and an additional donation of land increased the park’s size to 13 acres and allowed for the establishment of a children’s play area; and
WHEREAS, today, the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club continues its strong tradition of fellowship and community service in Augusta County and beyond; the group has sponsored eight new Ruritan clubs in the past 75 years and has had three members with perfect attendance for more than 40 years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club on the occasion of its 75th anniversary in 2015 and for its commitment to bettering the greater Augusta County area in a spirit of fellowship, goodwill, and community service; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles Forrer, president of the Stuarts Draft Ruritan Club, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for its outstanding accomplishments and contributions and best wishes for many more years of service and fellowship.
