Celebrating the life of Marian M. Bailey.

WHEREAS, Marian M. Bailey of Glade Spring, a former nurse and retired teacher who generously gave of her time and talents to numerous community organizations, a woman of great faith, and a devoted wife and mother, died on January 6, 2015; and

WHEREAS, as a young woman, Marian M. “Mossie” Bailey worked as a nurse for a local doctor who practiced in Glade Spring; when he moved, she enrolled at Emory & Henry College and earned a bachelor’s degree, and she later attended the University of Virginia, where she received a master’s degree; and

WHEREAS, Mossie Bailey was a teacher in the Washington County Public Schools system for nearly three decades; she taught at Hayter’s Gap, Liberty Hall, and Glade Spring elementary schools and also at Glade Spring Middle School; and

WHEREAS, Mossie Bailey belonged to many community organizations; she generously contributed her time and talents to the Black’s Fort Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Historical Society of Washington County, Virginia; and the Family, Community & Education Club; and

WHEREAS, other organizations that benefited from Mossie Bailey’s involvement include Project Glade and the Glade Spring Book Lovers Club, and as a member of the Glade Spring Library Board, she enthusiastically supported the opening of a new library in 2011 on the town square; and

WHEREAS, Mossie Bailey and a group of friends—many like herself were former teachers— established Hands on Helpers in 2003 to help less fortunate school children in Washington County; the mission of the group is to help raise a child’s self-esteem through acts of kindness; and

WHEREAS, Mossie Bailey and the members of Hands on Helpers provided food for children and their families during the holidays; they also purchased clothing, shoes, and other items the young people lacked; and

WHEREAS, a woman of great faith and a tireless volunteer at the Glade Spring Food Bank, Mossie Bailey belonged to Byars-Cobb Memorial United Methodist Church; she taught Sunday school and held many positions at the church, and she also belonged to United Methodist Women; and

WHEREAS, Mossie Bailey, who was predeceased by her first husband, C. R. Goff, and by her second husband, Archie Bailey, will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her daughter, Victoria, and her family, and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Marian M. Bailey of Glade Spring, a former nurse and retired teacher who generously gave of her time and talents to numerous community organizations, a woman of great faith, and a devoted wife and mother; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marian M. Bailey as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
