Commending Larry Butler.

WHEREAS, Larry Butler was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Cornerstones, Inc., with a prestigious 2015 Best of Reston Award in the Individual Community Leader category; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards honor individuals, organizations, and companies that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping others and improving the lives of people throughout the greater Reston area; and

WHEREAS, Larry Butler is senior director for parks, recreation, and community resources for the Reston Association, which is the Commonwealth’s first planned residential community; Reston’s inviting and attractive natural spaces are a defining feature for those who live and work there; and

WHEREAS, a passion for nature and the outdoors and a commitment to sharing that enthusiasm with others are hallmarks of Larry Butler’s approach to his work and his life; he has been with the Reston Association since 1982; and

WHEREAS, with dedication and an optimistic outlook, Larry Butler has been a valued employee of the Reston Association, and his work is greatly appreciated by the families and businesses who call Reston their home; he is a careful steward of the community’s natural resources; and

WHEREAS, Larry Butler works tirelessly to ensure that Reston’s lakes, ponds, and streams are carefully maintained and remain an asset to the community; he is well-known for his commitment to detail and his keen attention to water quality, earning him the nickname “Larry of the Lakes”; and

WHEREAS, Larry Butler also has encouraged young people to explore the outdoors and is an advocate of the benefits of exercise; he is a triathlete, hiker, and mountain biker and has been a volunteer for two triathlons, the Reston Triathlon and the Reston Sprint Triathlon; and

WHEREAS; combining his love of exercise and his commitment to helping others, Larry Butler, who is a member of the board of the YMCA Fairfax County Reston, helped launch the Reston Kids Triathlon and the Reston Relay Triathlon; and

WHEREAS, in an innovative outreach effort, Larry Butler helped open the Reston Kids Triathlon to less fortunate children; each year, 50 participants receive triathlon scholarships to purchase bicycles and other equipment that they need to take part in the event; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Larry Butler, senior director for parks, recreation, and community resources for the Reston Association, for his well-deserved honor as a 2015 Best of Reston Award recipient in the Individual Community Leader category; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Larry Butler as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his efforts to instill a love of the outdoors and physical exercise in all people.
