WHEREAS, Sally Clay Estes Flinn, a special educator who worked to prepare her students for higher education, careers, and citizenship and an active volunteer in the Richmond community, died on December 24, 2014; and
WHEREAS, a native of Nashville, Sally Flinn attended Ward-Belmont School and Harpeth Hall School; she attended Hollins University and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt University; and
WHEREAS, Sally Flinn began her career as a speech pathologist in public schools; she moved to Richmond in 1962, where she continued to serve special education students in schools and as a private therapist; and
WHEREAS, Sally Flinn donated her time and wise leadership to several charitable organizations in Richmond; she served as president of the Junior League of Richmond and chaired committees for Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Hospital, the Historic Richmond Foundation, the Valentine Richmond History Center, and the Boxwood Garden Club; and
WHEREAS, Sally Flinn enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she planned the Lenten Lunch program, helped found a school for deaf children, and organized The Caring Tree program for children of low-income families; and
WHEREAS, Sally Flinn cared deeply for her family, and she will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 52 years, Lewis, Jr.; children, Clay and Lewis III, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Sally Clay Estes Flinn, a dedicated speech pathologist and generous volunteer in Richmond; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sally Clay Estes Flinn as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
