2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, W. Nelson Taylor, Sr., of Hanover County, a proud veteran, passionate educator and school administrator, and dedicated community leader, died on August 31, 2012; and
WHEREAS, a native of Hanover County, Nelson Taylor learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age as a child of the Great Depression; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of service to his country, Nelson Taylor joined many of the other young men of his generation as a member of the Army Air Corps during World War II; he later completed a long, fulfilling military career as a major in the United States Air Force Reserve; and
WHEREAS, Nelson Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon College and a master’s degree from the University of Richmond; he conducted postgraduate studies at the University of Virginia and The College of William and Mary before opening his own insurance agency; and
WHEREAS, Nelson Taylor discovered a passion for teaching when he agreed to fill in for a teacher at Beaverdam Elementary School; throughout his 44-year career in public education, he served as a teacher and principal at elementary and high schools in Hanover County; and
WHEREAS, in 1959, Nelson Taylor became the founding principal of Patrick Henry High School, then worked with Henrico County Public Schools for two decades; after his retirement, he offered his expertise to the Hanover County School Board and served his fellow educators as a member of the Hanover Retired Teachers Association and Virginia Retired Teachers Association; and
WHEREAS, Nelson Taylor generously volunteered his time and talents with the Ashland Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club of Sandston, and the Patrick Henry YMCA in Ashland; he worked to enhance the quality of life of senior citizens with the AARP state legislative advocacy team and AARP Capital City Task Force; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by a son, Nelson, Jr., Nelson Taylor will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, Mae; daughter, Page, and her family; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of W. Nelson Taylor, Sr., a veteran, educator, and active member of the Hanover County community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of W. Nelson Taylor, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
